Promise [Pedro The Lion]

Promise

i'll take something to believe
something with long sleeves
cause it's unpredictable
that jesus said he'd fill my needs
but my heart still bleeds
he's just not physical

now why can't i see

if i look up and the sky's not there
is there any reason that i should be scared
when a promise is a promise i know

now we've established lack of sight
maybe vision's the right word
for what i need
cause i can't see with human eyes
lord knows i've tried
to follow where he leads me

why can't i see

if i look up and the sky's not there
is there any reason that i should be scared
when a promise is a promise i know

from what i've seen so far
i can't believe my eyes
and what a nice suprise

if i look up and the sky's not there
is there any reason that i should be scared
when a promise is a promise i know

if i look up and the sky's not there
is there any reason that i should be scared
when a promise is a promise i know

I don't understand what the writer means when he says:
that jesus said he'd fill my needs
but my heart still bleeds
he's just not physical

Especially the "he's just not physical" line.

I like the chorus because it reminds me that He is not going to dishonor a promise.

I like this part too:
from what i've seen so far i can't believe my eyes and what a nice suprise

I think it's basically that Christ is no longer on earth physically - we can't touch his garments to get healed, we can't hear him give sermons on the mount, we can't ask him questions face-to-face, etc.

Check out the lyrics to his song, Secret Of The Easy Yoke, where he talks about being in church and not really finding God there. He mentions seeing people needing some concrete motivation like WWJD bracelets when the abstract could not do the same.

Over The Rhine has a song, A Gospel Number, with a similar theme regarding wanting to see Jesus in the flesh.
