Living frugally in an apartment with solar energy

Unread postby musicmonkey » Mon Apr 28, 2008 2:49 am

I've been noticing that along with my rent increasing $60 in the last 2 years, my hydro bill is also increasing. I already think I consume less electricity than most people. I only keep a few lights on where I am and generally my apartment is dark - just ask my friends. Since I live in an apartment, I can't really buy solar panels for the roof and modify the electrical wiring, so I am looking at alternatives.

The article, How Solar Energy Can Help You Live Frugally mentions a few things including: solar powered radios, battery chargers, rechargeable batteries, and solar powered flashlights. As someone who wants to live more frugally and save money, I am going to try to get some solar powered devices this year while continuing to keep the lights off as often as possible as I have done for years. If anyone has any suggestions for harnessing solar power in an apartment, please let me know. I will try to keep a journal of how I progress in this thread.

Some companies I have found online include:

IPC Solar
http://www.icpsolar.com/

Solio
http://www.solio.com/

Watch Solio on NBC News

Earth Tech products also has an ipod and cellphone solar charger.
