Fear The Walking Dead | Season 2 Episode 2 Review: We All Fall Down

The second episode of Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead has a great opening sequence juxtaposing the beauty of an ocean beach with the horror of fresh zombies backlit by the sun. We initially fear for the children and then see that they are behind a chain link fence.

While in some ways this feels like a bottle episode because it doesn't really further the plot of our survivors, it allows us time to get to know our group a little better, specifically Madison and how she's willing to take the children on board Abigail in order to save them from their inevitable demise on Catrina (Catalina?) Island.

I was delighted to see Jake Austin Walker from the beautifully dark, slowburn Sundance series Rectify make a guest appearance as Seth, eldest son of this survivalist island family and to learn that Portland, Seattle and Vancouver (Canada actually exists in this world) have all been firebombed and that Arizona up to Colorado are gone too. It's the world building that we never got in The Walking Dead.

We hear the moody Songs: Ohia through Alicia's earbuds as she's clearly mourning her dead boyfriend and trying to make sense of this new world. Fear the Walking Dead is clearly becoming its own show apart from The Walking Dead. Without comic book superheroes and villains as its guide, it'll be interesting to see how it matures this season and next. AMC just renewed Fear for a 16-episode third season which means we're getting at least 29 more episodes. I'll take moody and brooding realized characters over archetypes and over-the-top fanboy gore.

Next week's episode is called Ouroboros. The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. We'll finally meet up with Flight 462 and get a new cast member, Arturo del Puerto.
