I seem to be on a posting binge tonight as I find myself Googling and drinking coffee. I'd like to start a new thread here on male role models: past and present. It'll be interesting to see what type of list we can compile. I'll start with one I found while Googlling...

Alan Alda

Alan Alda broke through the solid ice of macho maleness with a sensitive persona. The new male has since been mirrored in his "type-cast" image. Alda embodied in his movie portrayals virtues like "sensitivity" and caring tenderness. Alda became an instant hero whose nonthreatening presence on the screen heralded the new age, while the macho image limped off the stage.
